QuestionWe live in east Texas pineywoods. We have a 6' plus tomato plant in a large container. It is doing quite well. It now has 10 tomatoes on it, in various stages of development. BUT the weather is now getting into the 30's and 40's at night, so we moved it into the garage near the door. I open the garage door in the morning and it gets full sun until around noon. So far it's still surviving. My question is....how cold is too cold for tomato plants? And why aren't the tomatoes ripening? Some of them are quite large, but they aren't changing color at all. What could I do to help?
AnswerSylvia:
This is a situation where we are fighting nature. Tomatoes like full sun, nitrogen, water and weather around 75 degrees. Keep doing what you are doing. The tomatoes will ripen slow because of the weather and sun light. You can pull some of the fruit and sit in a window with sun in the house and they will ripen but the flavor will be less.
Keep them going as long as you can and enjoy.
Best wishes.
