gardening come spring

Question
Hi there,
I am planning on replacing a little bit of my lawn on my south/westish property with some vegetables/herbs come spring.  Right now its all grass. Is there anything I should be doing before the ground freezes to prepare this space for the spring gardening? I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada just incase its relevant. Thank you!

Answer
Dear Lauren,
I am a firm believer in fall tilling.  I always till the garden spot about now, as a matter of fact. My garden just got hit with it's first freeze this week.  I also fertilize in the fall and this year I'm covering the spot with some old hay and straw which prevents grass and weed growth next year.  For a first time garden spot, I would also recommend adding some top soil after tilling.  Be sure to till deeply enough to get the grass roots or you will fight that all next year and the grass will choke out veges and herbs.
I just finished canning the last of my peppers and tomatoes yesterday!  Gardening is such a rewarding experience.
I wish you well and much success.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
