QuestionI have a strange question. My daughter is trying to do a science fair project on which liquids are best for germinating bean seeds - ie. water, Pepsi, vinegar, etc. The procedure we found said to put the seeds in a 8 oz of each liquid. However, this is not working. The seeds are just rotting. In her research she found that seeds don't like to be soggy and that they need oxygen to germinate so it makes sense that this isn't working (I don't understand why the science fair project said to do like that!). Help! How do you germinate bean seeds? How can we test different liquids for germination? We have tried lima beans (from the grocery store) as well as several different kind of bean seed packets. If this is not the type of question you can answer I'll understand. Just thought I'd try!
Thanks,
Susan
AnswerDear Susan,
I just happen to know a little bit about germinating beans. I use a paper towel inside a jar. I hope I can type a visual, here. Line a small jar with a paper towel. Fill the jar about a quarter of the way full and the paper towel will absorb the water. Place the beans between the jar and towel at about the half full line . . . Keep the water below the seeds and the paper towel will continue to just stay moist.
I hope this helps. If something here seems unclear, feel free to write back for clarification.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
