Ants in my container garden

Question
Hello, I was just wondering what I can do about ants migrating to my planters. My garden consists of various edible peppers, spearmint, peppermint, anise, and various cactus and succulents. I live in San Antonio, TX. where it gets pretty hot this time of year, so I need to water a little more frequently. The ants seem to be attracted to the plants with higher water needs. They don't seem to be hurting the plants much, but I'm afraid they might be harvesting root aphids. Lately the pecan trees have been really sappy and I've noticed a sudden invasion of yellow aphids, some winged. Do those aphids have anything to do with this? How can I safely control the ants? Thank you very much!

Answer
Arturo:

With regards to ants they are difficult to deal with and are attracted by many things. At your local garden store, buy some small aut traps and sit on the floor in several places. If they are already in your plants then it is going to be difficult to get them out without using toxic materials. You can start with spraying with a light soapy water.

Regarding the aphids, use friendly Sevin to spray for these on both your trees and your plants if they are there.

I hop this works for you.

Best wishes.

Don
