Question
leaves with black spots and some yellow, then drop off plant.  Is this a fungus, if so, what should I use to ensure I get rid of it?

I believe that your plants are infected with a fungus. It could be soil born or it could be from the surface.

Consifer spraying with a light sulphur water. Also, consider injecting some sulphur water around the roots.
