Nitrogen and tomatoes

Question
Hi..we live in northern Delaware and it is obvious that we had too much nitrogen in our soil (we used mushroom soil) because our plants are huge without many blooms...my question is this..can we do anything at this point to cut down on the amount of nitrogen in our soil to produce more fruit at this point in time..or is this season lost?

Answer
There is no way to neutralize the existing nitrogen except by adding peat and compost to the soil. Although this will not eliminate the nitrogen, it will increase the phosphorus and potassium levels, as well as balance the ph levels of the soil. By adding these amendments every fall and spring, the nutrients will eventually balance out perfectly.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
