QuestionFor vegetable plans that vine, such as: pumpkin, squash, anad cantalope, does all of the garden soil need to be full of nutrients or just the mound where the plants were started. They spread so much, they have reached areas that are not well prepred and have less nutrients.

The mound where the roots are is what needs to have the proper nutrients. These vines spread out and cover a huge amount of space, but they do not absorb any significant nutritional value from anyplace but the roots. Well, the leaves absorb the light, but that's a different matter. The roots absorb the nutrients.
