QuestionHi, my kids and I planted some fruits and vegetables in pots this year and to
my surprise they are all doing very well. However i think some of them are
out growing there pots,. Can I transplant any of the following to the ground.
Tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli, beans, pumpkins, celery, cantaloupe and
watermelon. the tomatoes pumpkins, broccoli, already have vegetable growth
on them. thank you so much for your time, i,lm just trying to see if they
maybe can be saved or if they will dye without room to grow. jen
AnswerDear Jen Dale,
I have a general rule of thumb, and that is; if it's going to die anyway, I can't make it worse. My recommendation would be, transplanting at this point is risky, but keeping them in the small pots is certain death, so consider transplanting. Dig large holes for transplanting and fill the holes with water before transferring the plant. You may lose the early buds, but I think the plant and the rest of the harvest will be fine. I've transplanted tomatoes and peppers with fruit on them and not lost the produce.
Again, if they are outgrowing the pot, the end results outweigh the risks.
Broccoli and celery may be okay in the pots that they are already in. I'm guessing the vining plants will do much better with more space.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
