QuestionHI, i just had a few questions reguarding growing vegatables. First, i was wondering how to pollinate squash?(self) I was going to collect seeds from them at the end of the year and read up that they do cross pollinate so you dont get true seed. I have acorn, summer, and zucchini squash. Can i plant the stem of the squash up to the first set of leaves like a tomato? Next, Do beans cross pollinate? (Romano, string) Will a cucumber cross pollinate with any squash? How do i get seeds from a radish & greenonion & spinach? And lastly, i have red habanero, cayenne, sweet banana and green bell peppers. Should i plant the habaneros and cayenne peppers away from the others? Will all peppers cross pollinate? Thanks for your help i really appreciate it this is the first time ive planted a large scale vegatable garden. Think its around 20' by 18' and we are clearing a little more space also.
AnswerHello Dustin,
Just a few questions? I'll do my best, but you may have to Google some of these. I always plant different types of squash at opposite points of the garden. Each corner of my garden has a different kind of squash so they don't cross. And yes, cucumbers will cross with squash, so cucumbers are exactly in the middle of my garden, surrounded by bean plants and okra, to prohibit crossing. I always plant squash seeds, so I can't help you with the stem question. Although I've never had any problems with green peppers and jalapenos crossing, I'm not sure about cayenne and banana. I'd plant each of the various peppers at a distance as well, just to be safe. Radishes, onions and spinach all seed at the top toward the end of their producing season. Let a few remain in the ground and you'll see a stalk shoot up from the center that will flower and produce seeds.
There, that covers a number of your questions.
I wish you well in your gardening.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
