Replanting Seedlings

Question
Hi Mike,

How do I replant habanero seedlings from a crowded pot to individual pots? They are about 1-1/2 inches tall.

Thanking you in advance,
Miyoko

Answer
Miyoko, there a couple of ways to divide the plants. Some gardeners will remove the entire soil ball from the original pot and gently tap the roots on a pan or container until the soil begins to break up. the individual seedlings will then separate allowing you to transplant them to individual pots.

Another method I use is to gently insert a pencil into the root ball, grasp the seedling at the bottom of the stem, and carefully lift the seedling from the soil. I then immediately transplant the seedling into another pot.

I usually prepare the new pot by filling it with a fertile potting mix, prepare the center by boring out a hole with a pencil, and then replant the seedling at the same depth as the original pot. Try and do your best to disturb the roots a minimally as possible. Once transplanted, immediately water the seedling from the bottom to avoid disturbing the roots.

Keep in mind that when any plant is transplanted, it usually sets the plant's growth back 5-7 days. This is due to the roots needing to reacclimate to their new environment. But once this occurs, the seedling will grow normally.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if you ever need assistance.

Regards,

Mike
