QuestionHi Kindred. My name is Marie and I live in Northeast PA. I recently was shopping and picked up about 11 different kind of vegetable seeds. Some are to be planted inside and others outside. Can't I start all of them inside and then later transfer to outside?
Seeds I got--Cucumber (national pickling), Carrots, Tomato, Watermelon (sugar baby), Pepper (carnical mix), Pepper (sweet long pepper mix), Green Bean (Contender), Cantaloupe (Hales Best), Pea (Alaska), Sweet Corn (Golden Cross Bantam Hybrid) and Mesclun (Salad Mix).
I hope the least and area will be able to help you to help me.
Thank you
Marie
AnswerDear Marie,
Tomatoes and Peppers always do the best when started indoors and planted as small plants, rather than from seeds. Cucumbers and cantaloupe can be transplanted easily, although I will tell you they need to be planted at opposite ends of the garden to avoid them crossing. Carrots and greens would be very difficult to transplant outdoors as carrots are their root system and greens mature very quickly. We are in the Ozark mountains, so our growing season starts before yours, but . . . I planted spinach and various salad greens on February 29th outdoors and we had fresh salad last Friday. So, outdoors is my recommendation on that. I've never started corn indoors before, so I can't tell you one way or another, but I think it would transplant fairly well.
I wish you much success and enjoyment from your garden.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
