herbs and vegetables

Question
We are going to try to have a small garden this year. All past experiences have NOT been successful, but we have always tried in pots and this year will dig a plot. My question is, are there any herbs and vegetables that cannot be planted together or that do particularly well together. Our main interests are tomatoes (grape and big boy), cucumbers, squash, rosemary, basil, lavender, oregano, and and italian parsley (that one is mostly for caterpillars). Thank you!

Answer
Dear Jeannie,
I have learned, and this is a biggie . . . herbs are wonderful spacers in a garden and cucumbers and squash need to be at opposite ends or sides, as they can cross.  I suggest that you plant your tomatoes in the middle, surrounded by the various herbs you mentioned and sow the cucumbers and squash on opposite sides of the garden.
I wish you well.  I think more people will be going toward gardening, as food costs and dangers continue to escalate.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
