QuestionFirst time with cukes. seed pack says grow on top of a mound-???. why nit in a trench so they retain water? also location ---shade, sunny, or little of each??? same for watermellons???
AnswerDennis, it is not necessary to mound squash plants, although many old time gardeners follow this practice. The reason for this is to give the plants more depth for root growth and for better drainage. However, if you use raised beds or till deeply, this should not be an issue.
All members of the squash family require full sun for at least eight hours per day for optimum growth. This includes cucumbers and melons. Be sure to mulch around the base of the plants with straw or dried grass clippings to hold in moisture and cool the soil. The mulch can also be used as a buffer between the soil and the fruit. This prevents the fruit from rotting as it matures.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
