Growing potatoes

Question
Hi Mike, I have read where people have grown potatoes under straw. I have a lot of pine trees, and was wondering if I can use pine straw to grow potatoes under ? Thank you for your time and answer. Gary

Answer
Gary, I would not recommend pine straw due to its high acidity. Potatoes like a neutral ph level. That is why regular straw is a good option. Gardeners who use this method usually encase the straw with chicken wire or some other type of wire enclosure. The foliage will grow out in all directions. Once it turns brown in early fall, simply remove the enclosure and harvest the potatoes. This method requires very little work other than watering. The straw holds in the moisture exceptionally well and reduces the need to water except in very hot conditions.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
