Planting a garden by moon phase

Question
Hello,
I am just curious does it matter what moon phase it is when you plant a vegetable garden.  The reason I ask is because my grandma on my dads side and my great grandma on my moms side both say you are supposed to plant your vegetables when it is a full moon.  Just curious and maybe you could explain why they would say this.  Thank you in advance

Answer
John, this practice began with the Aztecs many centuries ago. They believed that the full moon radiated energy and light and therefore benefitted the growth of plants. However, there is absolutely no scientific or horticultural evidence that this has any positive affect whatsoever. With the wide range of germination times and growth rates, the moon goes through many phases before a plant reaches maturity.

Today's horiculturists base planting times strictly on days before and after your last expected frost date. On average, most annuals and vegetable seeds should be started indoors 4-6 weeks prior to transplanting. Direct seeding is usually relegated to root crops and cool-weather crops such as lettuce, which can be sowed in the garden anytime after the soil is dry and ready to work.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
