QuestionWell, we had beautiful plants with zucchinis set, and then the leaves started looking plastic-like and the zucchinis stopped growing. We were watering overhead and wetting the leaves until we found out that was not good. Today I found a small hole in a finger size zucchini and it felt mushy, so I opened it up and found a worm. I pulled the plant and found several other worms in the hollow "branch" of the leaves. There were varying sizes of worm. Kind of light green to clear in color. They may have been green from the zucchini they were eating. We had removed some of the leaves and that appears to be where the worms are getting in. I can't find any evidence of a beetle or squash bug.
Getting ready to try new plants and want to prevent the same problem.
AnswerDear Deborah,
I am not certain of the type of worms you are dealing with, but I mix a bit of diatomaceous earth with our soil and then sprinkle it on any plants that are susceptible to parasitic invasion. Check with a local nursery or online for the product. It sells under trade mark names, I believe, but diatomaceous earth is the general term. I really like the various uses for it and it is supposed to be safe for birds and mammals.
I wish you well.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
