Cucurbit mounds

Question
Where we live in Illinois we have very good topsoil which is free of rocks, clay or sand.  As a result, when we plant cucurbits the mounds tend to erode and expose the roots when watering.  I was struck with the following idea of how to prevent this from happening and would like to hear your opinion.
The idea is to take old 5-gallon buckets (or similar containers) and cut them into "rings" approximately 6" wide, set them flat on the ground, fill them with soil and plant the seeds inside the ring.  This would help prevent erosion, contain the water when irrigating the plant and also make it easier to find the base of the plant once the foliage explodes all over the garden during the summer.  Are you aware of anyone trying this, or can you think of any reasons why it might not be a good idea?
Thanks for all the helpful info on this site!

Answer
Dear Jeremy,
I think you have an idea worth trying.  I am not aware of anyone trying it, at this time, but hey . . . that's how great ideas are born.  Please let me know how it works out, if you decide to to do that next year.
I wish you well in your endeavor.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
