QuestionWhat are the clues to when is the proper time, and the proper signs for harvesting acorn squash, and watermelon here in Rhode Island (zone 5 or 6)? I never tried these plants before and do not want to pull to soon, or to late.

Acorn squash will be dark green when ripe, but both produce should pass the thump test. Thump them now, so you know the sound, then; when the squash and watermelon are getting close to size, thump them, again. When they are ripe, there is a fullness to the sound of the thump. We've been going by the "thump test" for years.
