QuestionFor my first time growing acorn squash, and watermelon here in Rhode Island(zone 5 or 6), in a PACKED garden I find myself wondering when I should plan to harvest them, and how do I know when they are ready to be harvested? If my timing is off, I believe all I will get is MUSH if I wait to long, or very small inedable fruit if I harvest to soon?
AnswerDear Raymond,
There is a different sound to a "thump" when you test them, but you have to be familiar with the "technique." You are correct in wanting to harvest at the proper time. Too long and you will have mush, but if they are just a few days too soon, they will ripen in the window or on the table. I'm guessing you still have a bit of time according to your zone. The watermelon and acorn squash are just now ripening in zone 7.
