QuestionQUESTION: Hi, We had a couple of squash plants grow in our new lawn and one now has a fruit. It is the same green as a honeydew melon and it is about 6-1/2" long and quite fat (watermellon shaped). Since we didn't notice it until a few days ago, I cannot say what it may have looked like previously (color, etc. may have changed). It is not a variety I have grown before and I think it may be a spaghetti squash. Can you tell me for sure? Also, when should we pick it. Thanks.
ANSWER: Dear Gina,
Spaghetti squash does grow like a small watermelon, shape-wise. They are ready to be picked when they turn a fairly bright yellow. Since this sounds like "volunteer plants," are you sure it isn't a watermelon? If it is a spaghetti squash, it should begin to change colors soon.

QUESTION: I would rather have watermellon than spaghetti squash! Does watermellon start off pale green? Also where the fruit is attached to the plant there is a thick part of the stem that is dark green and light stripes (lengthwise). What do you think?
AnswerDear Gina,
Of course, I can't be certain, but . . . if it continues to grow, while staying green, it could very well be a watermelon. If it stops growing and begins turning yellow, then it's probably spaghetti squash. I'm not sure about your area and growing zone, but I'm in the Ozark mountains and the season for spaghetti squash is nearly finished, while watermelon is just now beginning to ripen. So, that's my opinion at this time, for what it's worth. Either way it turns out, enjoy!
