QuestionQUESTION: I have two zucchini plants on the south side of my house. They have had several HUGE flowers and a few small zucchini. Everyone says to check them every day, as they grow very fast. Mine have been on the vine for a few weeks now, but have only grown about 2-3 inches. Why aren't they growing? My tomatoes are doing fine, the leaves are large and green. Why are the fruit not getting big?
ANSWER: Dear Shea,
It sounds like a lack of nutrients in the soil or too sandy of soil. Try some natural plant food, fish emulsion or manure mixed with top soil. It won't be easy to get that around the large plants at this point, but that's all I can think of to do. Try the fish emulsion first, as it can be mixed in when watering.
I hope this helps.

QUESTION: Where can I get fish emulsion? My soil is not sandy, but it does have clay. New zucchini start every now and then, but none ever seem to get any bigger than 2-3 inches. I have two plants that may be too close to each other, could this affect the fruit? Both plants look very dark green and healthy. They are only about one foot apart. Do you think I should remove one of the plants?
Thanks for your help. Shea
AnswerDear Shea,
Ours grow very close together, so I don't think you should move one. Fish emulsion is available in most garden or plant departments. Perhaps you have a drainage problem, as well, with clay. I don't know if you can salvage this year's crop, but for next year, I'd prepare the soil this fall with manure and maybe some peat moss or something that will keep the clay from packing hard around the roots.
