QuestionWe bought seeds...stalks are up to 5' high now & just tasseling...one tiny ear with white silk has just appeared on some stalks. Is that all we can expect...one little ear from each regular size cornstalk? and to harvest seeds..I guess we let it mature on the stock until the plant dies?
To harvest the veggie...do we wait for the silk to brown some? From reading on the Internet...I understand the stalks only get to 2 1/2 ' or so...ours are way past that. Thanks
AnswerDonna, the size of the stalk will vary based on the variety of baby corn that you are growing. I have seen them grow to nearly 6 feet.
You are correct in regard to harvesting. Once the silk browns and starts to dry out, you can check the tip of the ear to ensure the kernels have plumped to maturity. The ear is then ready to be harvested. If you want to harvest seed, then you leave the ear on the stalk until the kernels completely dry.
Good luck, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
