white larvae

Question
this is my first year growing watermelons and cantaloupes and i have a white larvae problem on the bottom of a few melons. i have sprayed serving concentrate on them even rolled the melons and sprayed the back side and the ground. what are these things and what do i need to do to get rid of them. it appears that they show up when the cantaloupes and watermelons are starting get ripe. please help me out.

Answer
Dear Greg,
The larvae belong to a particular insect and I would try to identify what that is to eradicate it from your garden.  In our organic gardening, we also have chickens that are the pesticide available!  My other suggestion would be to get the melons off the ground when they begin to ripen.  It could be, that just a bit of straw under the melon will protect it from the larvae infestation.  If not, a patio brick or something along those lines may be helpful, as the melon itself does not need to rest on the soil for sustenance.
I hope this helps.  Cantaloupe is my favorite!
Kind Regards,
Kindred
