QuestionHi..I have never had good results growing pumpkins and watermelons in my garden. This year for the fun of it I put two plants together in a large pot. one pumpkin and one watermelon. I like the leaves on the vines. But to my surprise the watermelon plant has 5 watermelons growing on the vine and the pumpkin one. Since it is a large pot the fruit on the vines are not supported and I am afraid the weight of them on the vine will eventually make them fall off. I am afraid to transplant for fear the plants will die addition to never having luck planting them in my soil before. Do you have any ideas for some sort of hammock or support for these fruits. Also the pot in on a concrete slab. I am afraid that the heat might hurt the fruit. Am I right?
AnswerDear Donna,
I recommend that you get some straw. Get a couple of bales or so. When you cut the twine on the bale, you will notice it has been baled in sections, called flakes. Stack some flakes of straw around the pot, raising the "floor level" for the vines and lifting them off of the concrete.
I hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
