Black leaves on my pepper plants

Question
QUESTION:  Hello, I'm growing several different kinds of peppers and recently had an afid problem.A friend told me to spray my plants with a solution of dish soap, lemon juice and water which I did and now plants have all turned black. Is this normal? or do I need to do something to repair the damage?

ANSWER: Dear James,
It sounds like a reaction to high acid to me.  I suggest you "over-water" them for a couple of evenings and make sure the residue from the treatment is removed from the plants as well as the root system.  Just do this for a couple of days, as you don't want to actually drown them.  See what happens from there.  Are the plants still growing at all?
I hope the watering helps.

QUESTION:  In regards to your question are the plants still growing? yes, and have set fruit too.

Answer
Dear James,
I have had a ton of queries regarding black and purple leaves and stems this year on peppers.  If they are growing and bearing, then tread lightly on any treatments.  I am beginning to think the hybrid and genetic "improvements" may be altering the colors of the plants a bit.  I just don't know, but if things are growing, then don't fix it too much!  A couple of good waterings should let you know if it's the treatment you gave or the plants themselves.
