3 Sisters Gardening Method

Question
I have a separate area for my 5 rows of sweet corn and as a kick planted some seeds of cantaloupe between the rows is this okay or should I remove the cantaloupe

Answer
Wally, the ancient Incas used this method in their gardens. It has since been termed the "3 Sisters Gardening" method.

What this entails is growing corn 18" apart in rows separated by 2'; sow vining beans between them, using the corn stalks for support; and squash or vining fruit such as cantaloupe dispersed every 3' within the rows or between the other plantings.

This style of gardening is very effective and saves on space. The only downside is that your cantaloupes may be slightly smaller due to them competing with the corn for nutrients. Just be sure to fertilize every 10 days with a balanced fertilizer until the corn is harvested.

I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
