Hello! I'm wondering how I find out (without buying expensive book) which vegies grow best in San Francisco (foggy Inner Richmond area)

Do a Google search of the plants you'd like to grow, then check the zones and compare your weather conditions. You can start pretty simply and usually end up in some sort of seed company site. Frequently they will give the information you are seeking. Usually, there is enough information about length of growing season, climate such as hot or dry or whatever and that's how you determine what will grow best. You may just try a local greenhouse or nursery and see what they can recommend.
