QuestionHi: Mike i am going to plant tomatoes and i tested my soil the ph level is 7.5 nitrogen is very low phosphorous is very low and the potash is low what do you think i need to do.Thanks in advance.Butch
AnswerButch, the best solution is to amend the soil with as much organic matter as you can. These materials include peat moss, aged manure, and compost. You can order organic soil from most landscape companies or garden centers.
In the meantime, if the ph is above 7.0 (neutral), you can lower it by adding ground sulfur. When the ph is below 7.0, you need to add ground limestone.
The organic soil will take care of the nutrient deficiency and help balance the ph naturally, but make sure you work in a balanced granular fertilizer before planting; preferably with a ratio of 10-10-10. Then, during the growing season, feed the plants every 2 weeks with a water-soluable fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium. Avoid using a fertilizer high in nitrogen on tomatoes because they tend to promote lush foliage and very few blossoms.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Mike
