QuestionI know they are grown in colder weather however I planted some very late and they are really growing .It is spring in alabama can I still harvest and eat?
AnswerDave, you sure can. Turnips, like garlic, are best transplanted or sown in late fall. This gives the roots a chance to establish over the winter. However, many falls here in Ohio make it near impossible to plant in November. When this occurs, I plant in very early spring, once the soil is workable. Although the harvest is a little later, the taste and growth is still excellent.
Just one piece of advice. Never cut all of the leaves off your turnips. The roots need some top-growth to supply the nutrients necessary for strong root development. I recommended always leaving a third of the top growth when harvesting the greens. Enjoy!
Thanks for writing, and please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
