QuestionWe live in New Orleans, La. In mid October, we planted some acorn squash plants in a large pot. The pots had soil that had been sitting outside for a while and was not very well drained. I poked holes in the pot and placed broken pottery around the holes to allow the soil to drain properly. About 3 weeks later the plants had white spots all over them and now those same leaves are all white. The new leaves seem to be alright, although their color is a lighter shade of green than the earlier leaves. The plants were also flowering about a week ago and now the flowers have wilted up. I've never grown squash before. What are the basics, and what is the cause of and solution to my white leaves. Thanks for all your help.

AnswerDear Nathan,
What you have described sounds like some sort of mold or fungus. Your particular location also indicates you are describing some sort of mold or fungus following Katrina. I really think you need different soil, or well drained soil that has had some time to dry and then "be worked" to safely grow produce in your area.
I wish you well. Please take care.

Kindred
