White spots on tomatoes

Question
Hi,

I live in Chicago. I noticed small white spots on my tomatoes. Not on the leaves, but on the tomatoes. I can scratch them off, but if I leave them on, the skin gets holes in it. Do you know what this is AND is it safe to eat these tomatoes? I've been cutting these spots off before I eat them.  Thanks in advance.      Bob

Answer
Dear Bob,
I believe it is a fungus or mold of some sort.  If you cut around it and are sure to remove the affected part of the fruit, they are probably safe to eat.  It's like finding a bad spot on anything, it's just that since you are gardening, you see the spot in its progression.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
