TOPPING OFF TOMATO PLANTS

Question
ALTHOUGH I DID DO SOME PRUNING MY FEW PLANTS HAVE PLENTY OF EXTRA BRANCHES AND TONS OF TOMATOS.  ALL ARE BEEFSTEAK VAR. THE THING IS, THE PLANTS ARE GROWING SO WELL THAT THEY ARE WELL UP TO 7' , STILL FLOWERING AND PRODUCING, AND STILL GROWING.  IT GOES W/O SAYING, I JUST CAN'T TIE & SUPPORT THESE MONSTERS UP ANYMORE....SOOOOO HOW SHOULD/DO I SAFELY TOP/CUT THEM SO AS NOT TO DO DAMAGE TO THE PLANTS AND EXISTING FRUIT ON THE PLANT. I WORRY ABOUT OPENING THE PLANT TO INFECTION OR BUGS BY CUTTING IT.

Answer
Dear Kathy,
It does sound like further pruning is in order.  There are organic products that can be used to coat the branch at the point of the cut.  I think simply pinching them shouldn't invite infection or parasites, but you may want to use some sort of myrrh resin or something like that.  I wouldn't cut more than a foot off the top at one time and simply removing the ends of the higher branches should slow the growth.
Wow!  Sounds like you are quite the tomato gardener!
Kind Regards,
Kindred
