Green Peppers rotting on plant

Question
My green peppers are starting to rot on the bottom before they are even big enough to pick. I have not been watering them. Relying mainly on rain fall and dew. We live in N. Michigan.

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Debbie,
I'm sorry to hear this.  It sounds like a problem beneath the surface or with the plant itself.  If all your plants are doing this, then I'm guessing it is the soil, itself.  I can't think of anything that will adress the problem this late in the season, but I would certainly work the soil before next year.  If this garden spot is a regular it may need a break, we always let the land lie fallow every 7 years.  I don't know what you have used for fertilizer, but perhaps there is some sort of mold or fungus problem in the soil or something that has been added.  I would turn soil up this fall and let it dry out very well before adding anything or planting next spring.
I realize I haven't seen the situation, but it sounds like a fungus of some kind to me.
Kind Regards,
Kindred
