Pruning pepper plants

Question
I am growing several different kinds of peppers what i am wondering is should I be prunning off the under leaves or the very large leaves or should I just let well enough alone and let the plant do its thing. I live in Northern Mn where the sun doesnt get too hot or to cold.

Answer
Martine, the only time I prune pepper plants is during the seedling stage immediately after they produce their fourth set of leaves.  Doing so promotes a bushier growing habit. If the plants are getting leggy, you can actually prune the top set of leaves at any time, but the earlier the better.

If the plants are doing well at this stage, I would leave well enough alone. I also live in the midwest, so we're still a couple of weeks away before the plants actually start producing fruit.

In the meantime, continue to fertilize every ten days with a fertilizer high in phosphorus. Mulch the plants with dried grass clippings or straw to help retain moisture, and water to a depth of 1" per week.

I hope this answered your question.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
