QuestionI am new at growing sunflowers. I have planted 5 packs of seeds. They have sprouted but something is eating the sprouts. What can I do to stop what is eating the sprouts so they grow? I have a small back yard and planted them the length of one side of the yard by a fence. I don't want to lose them and have to replant new seeds. Can I cover them with something till they get bigger?
AnswerTherese, the best product on the market today for protecting young seedlings is reemay, otherwise sold as row covers.
Reemay is a lightweight, fleece-like material which is great for protecting young plants from light frosts, insects, and pests. It can be purchased at any reputable garden center or nursery. The great thing about this product is that it lets in sunshine and air, but no insects can penetrate it. You just need to secure it with garden pins or rocks to keep it from blowing away.
Attached is a website that will give you more information on this product.
