QuestionHello Mike,
I've been told Cedar mulch has something in it that tomatoes don't like and it stunts their growth. Is there any truth to this? I'm in Fort Worth, Texas and mulch is a must since it gets so hot and dry here.
Thank you,
Karen Bernard
AnswerKaren, this is a myth that's been going around for the past couple of years. Many gardeners like to use cedar mulch because it lasts much longer than traditional pine mulch. Of all the natural woods, it has great resistance to rotting. Studies have shown it causes no ill effects to tomatoes.
Just be sure not to apply too deep an application. Many gardeners make the mistake of putting 3" or more of mulch, only to end up with mildew and other fungus diseases.
Mulch is a must regardless of what zone of the country you live in. It not only helps retain water, but also keeps down weeds and gradually decomposes to add nutrients to the soil.
I hope this answered your question. Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.
Regards,
Mike
