potatos growing above ground

Question
MIKE: I HAVE PLANTED ABOUT 7 MOUNDS OF POTATOS, I HAVE ONE MOUND THAT LOOKS LIKE THE POTATOS ARE GROWING ON THE BRANCHES.  THEY LOOK LIKE LITTLE GREEN TOMATOES,HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF THIS?  THEY ARE GROWING ALEAST OVER A FOOT OFF OF THE GROUND.
THANKS. LARRY

Answer
Larry, potatoes are tubers and can only be grown at the root level of the plant.  What you may have is a volunteer plant, one that grew from a random seed.

I use a large amount of compost in my garden, which consists of many kitchen scraps.  Many of these contain seeds from peppers, tomatoes, squash, etc.  I always end up with a few volunteers in my garden eavery spring as a result.

I'm not sure how the seed got into your garden, or what seed it may have been.  But I can guarantee you it is not a potato plant.

Have a nice evening.

Regards,

Mike
