QuestionHi. I grew bell peppers in NJ w/ no problem, feeding them K-Gro, etc. Here in FL the peppers start turning red when only the size of a quarter. Plants themselves are small. When I gave them K-Gro, they got flowers but did not produce peppers. I've experimented w/ amounts of sun, water, soil type -- same tiny peppers. Plant usually dies after producing one or two. Advice, please? Thanks.
AnswerThe difference has to be with the soil. You obviously had superior soil in New Jersey.
Keep in mind that K-Gro, as well as many other water soluble fertilizers, are very high in nitrogen. Fertilizers high in nitrogen result in lush foliage but very few blooms and fruit.
You need to first amend your soil with as much organic matter as possible. These supplements include compost, aged manure, shredded leaves, and peat moss. You then want to fertilize with a product high in phosphorus. A good ratio would be 10-20-10. Many fertilizers even specify what type of plants they are used for. Be sure to purchase one designated for flowering and fruit-producing plants.
Good luck, and have a great week.
