My plants

Question
I bought a few tomato plants about a month ago.  I have not yet transferred them to the pots I have for them.  Will they be OK for now.  What do I use for bugs that eat the leaves?

appreciated
Kathy

Answer
Kathy, tomatoes are one of the few vegetables that actually benefit from transplanting.  The reason they is is that they form nodules on the roots which require more oxygen.

I always transplant mine twice before placing into the garden.  I transplant the first time after four weeks, and the second time after three.  I then slowly acclimate them to outdoor conditions by moving them outdoors in a protected location for a few hours each day for about a week.  I then leave them out one full day, and then transplant them into the garden.

For insects, use an insecticdal soap or pyrethrum.  These are organic products that are highly effective, but not toxic to humans.  They can be purchased at most garden centers, or on-line through companies such as Gardens Alive or Planet Natural.

Good luck, and have a nice evening.

Regards,

Mike
