QuestionI have a lot of newly harvested garlick, which I would like to braid for storage. I can't seem to get the hang of it. The stems seem to be too stiff to braid. Is there a trick to it? or do I simply wait until the stems wilt enough?
AnswerGerry, the stems have to fully wilt before braiding. I actually leave my garlic and onions in the ground until the stems turn completely brown and fall over. Doing so allows the foliage to continue feeding the plants resulting in larger bulbs.
Once they do wilt, you simply braid the stems just as you would long hair using the cross over technique. I braid four plants at a time, but most gardeners braid between 3 and 6.
Good luck, and have a great day.

Mike
