Is it time yet?!?

Question
Hi, I was just wondering if it was too early to start thinking about planting my vegetable garden.  I will plant the usuals.  I live in Denver Colorado.

Answer
Jamie, not knowing how severe your winter has been, it's hard for me to give you a definitive answer.  I can tell you that there are certain vegetables that you can sow or transplant as soon as the soil warms up to a point where it is fairly dry and loose.  These include broccoli, cabbage, beets, peas, radishes, lettuce, and spinach.  The general rule of thumb is to plant these hardy vegetables no earlier than 4 weeks prior to your last expected frost date.  Carrots and onion sets can be planted 2 weeks prior to the last frost.  Sensitive plants such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, corn, squash, and beans need to be delayed until one week after the last frost date.  Any sooner and you will risk losing them.

If you're unsure about your last frost date, I have attached a web link that will assist you.

I hope this helps.  Please write again if I can ever be of assistance.

Regards,

Mike
