A flowering vine in Occidental Calif.

Question

It is growing along the Bohemian Hwy roadside. It is a climber, but mostly creeps. It has little, light purple/pink flowers in small bunches that droop off double stems at end of vine. Its stems are cladode like lower down on vine, at flower they are rounder. Woody in structure. Its leaves are long thin pointed almost grass like in appearance but shaped like a eucalyptus leaf, they grow at nodes about every 3-5 inches but can grow much closer 'bunched', two large leaves and under them two very small. It has pods for seeds and small what I call 'wrapper/grabbers' for holding onto things to climb. It was seen growing in wide swaths along the Hwy between Freestone and Camp Meeker near Occidental Calif. Don't know if its wild or just gone wild.

Answer
Hi Sheri,

This is a Sweetpea; either (Lathyrus Vestitus), or "Lathyrus Laetiflorus Alefeldii".  Common names are Alefeld's Pea, Pacific Pea, or San Diego Sweetpea.  Thanks to your thorough description, I had narrowed it down to 1 of 3 things before I even realized you had attached a photo.   The grabber's you mentioned are called tendrils, and are a key characteristic for identifying vines. I also found a website with great pictures of Sonora County wildflowers, which I'm including below.  Thanks so much for your question!

Sincerely,
Susan Tabor
