QuestionI recently was given this 6 ft.
double bloom hibiscus tree in September. The person that gave it to me did not take very good care of it. I did repot it with in the few days of owning it, what a project that was! I now have it in my Fla. room which is some what heated but not very well insulated just yet.I live in southern New Jersey and the winters can get cold! Can this hibiscus live in the winters here in a dormant state till spring? This is a beautiful tree, with big orange blossoms. I hate to see it die. It's just so big for my living room with 3 little kids running around. At what temperature should I start to worry about the tree? I can get a picture to you, if you really need to see one. I hope you can help me.
AnswerSounds like you have a tropical Hibiscus species. It will not withstand freezing temperatures, i.e. below 32 F. Anything above that should be fine.
If you have a garage that stays cool, but above freezing, it can stay there over the winter. Light isn't very important if it is very cool, but placing it near a window may help.
It will probably look very sad by spring, but it should bounce back quickly if you put it in the sun and give it some fertilizer, especially since you have already repotted it.
