No, we didn't see any. Could it be Bayberry?

No, Bayberry is a bluish gray berry.
The reason I asked about the thorns were because my first instinct said rose hips. That is the name for the seed pod that follows the rose flowers.
After doing some searching...I came upon many references to the wild roses along the coastal highways in Maine.
Rosa rugosa, is the most common species quoted. They are known for their showy hips.
I'm sure you just overlooked the thorns and that is what your plant is.
