QuestionI bought a shrub from a horticultural center and the folks there swear up and down that it is a mulberry. I searched the internet for care of a mulberry and the pictures look nothing like what I have. It is a fast growing deciduous shrub (has already grown a foot just over the summer) with clusters of berries growing around the stem (like a halo) but so far only at the bottoms. It has white blooms that turn into small yellow berries which then turn lavender and then a bright purple. The berries are very compact and small but come off one by one and are a little bigger than pellets that you would shoot out of a b.b gun. The stems are a light green with a fine white fuzz and the leaves are a muted green. It doesn't seem the have a problem with pest either. I havent seen any birds or other animals go near it which makes me think it may be poisonous and I have small children (who won't go near it either). I'll try to upload a picture as soon as I find out how. I hope my description was in depth enough. Please help if you can.
AnswerHello Melissa,
Your plant sounds like a beautyberry bush or Callicarpa sp.
I have seen mixed info about if they are toxic...I have never seen any adverse reactions. If they are poisonous...My guess is you would need to eat ALOT.
Look that name up on a search engine and get back with me if that is not your plant.
Thank you for your question,
Angie
P.S. - Mulberries have different shaped leaves on the same plant making them easy to ID
