QuestionAs afr as my zone goes, I live near Chattanooga, TN which is on the GA/TN state line. I really know nothing about plants and am not sure what zone I am in. These plants were planted around janurary and I never saw them bloom this year. Maybe that was because they are young? And I do not own a digital camera so it may be difficult for me to send a picture.

My husband and I moved into a new home back in Janurary and the builder did new landscaping for us. He planted some bushes in front of our home and I have no idea what they are. They need to be pruned badly. They have a grayish green color near the ends of the branches and they get a little more yellow green toward the center of the plant. They are also very fuzzy/velvety to the touch--on the leaves as well as the stems/branches. The leaves are an oval shape and grow asymetrical along the branch. The leaves also look like they have tiny reddish-brown spots on them, as well asa on the branch. Any idea?

Hello Tiffany,
Could you please tell me what zone you live in and what size the leaves are...do the shrubs bloom to your knowledge?
If possible a picture would be great!
Get back with me and we will continue to work on your ID.
Thank you,
Angie
AnswerTiffany,
Please look at the twigs and leaves. If they are directly opposite from each other on the branch then I would say it is a type of Viburnum. That is my first quess given the information you have provided. If that is the case...it would be difficult to narrow down the species w/o a picture because there are hundreds of them. Please type that into a search engine and let me know if you think that is it.
If not then we will continue to work on the ID.
As a side note, I'm sure your landscaper had some sort of plan or at least a supply list on file. May be best to check there also.
Thank you for your question,
Angie
Tiffany,
I just wanted to add another small note.
Most shrubs can be pruned during a majority of the year. The two greatest concerns that effect your decision to prune are...1) cutting off next years flower buds or 2) doing it too late in the fall, because pruning forces new growth that could be damaged by a early frost.
So with that said, no matter if we have the right plant identified...go ahead and prune when needed. Just keep those couple of things in mind.
