QuestionI have a house plant and am trying to find out what it is. It reminds me of a spider plant, it lives in my home and has skinny palm like leaves that hang down. I have had it for almost 2 years and is about a foot tall. It just recently has acquired little gnat like bugs around it, I have never seen this before. I re-potted them a week ago, with the same potting soil and suddenly the bugs. I need to get rid of them because I think they are eating my plants!! Any suggestions?
AnswerSounds like your plant is a type of Dracaena. If you send me a picture I can confirm it.
The bug you have is likely to be Fungus Gnat. It is found in "cheaper" or some store brands of potting soil. They also show up if soil is water logged from poor drainage or over-watering. The gnat its self won't hurt you plants too bad however the larvae feed on plant roots. Thats where the damage will happen.
You can kill most of the larvae by allowing the soil to dry out, not so far that it hurts the plant. For the adults,a standard house plant spray (containing pyrethrin) should knock them down.
