QuestionI have a plant that crept up in my yard - it was about 3 feet tall before we even noticed it so it grew very fast. Then it got little white flowers that looked like tomato or apple flowers which then turned to green berries about the size of medium blueberry. Now the berries are turning dark purple, almost black. I've asked 2 people who know a lot about plants but they have no idea what it is. I am e-mailing a picture of it as well. I am very curious what this plant is and if the berries are edible. I live in Everett, Washington. Thank you for your help!
AnswerHello Mary,
Your picture is a little out of focus but from what I can see, your plant looks like a member of the Solanaceae family. It looks like on of the night shade members...most are poisonous. I'm including a web page address that I found with some pictures and info. If you feel like I'm wrong after looking at the pictures, please let me know and I will ask some questions to narrow down our search.

I spent a few wonderful years in Lake Stevens working at a nursery, I long to visit the area again...Thank you for sparking some great memories!
