QuestionI've been trying to identify all of the berry 'plants' on our property...so far most have come up poisonous. The following has stumped me....the bush has leaves about 2" long by 5/8" wide Green on top and silvery underneath. Shaped like an eye..narrow at base and tip while widest in the middle. The berries are very peculiar they are somewhat translucent skin in appearance and are a subtle shade of red but the skins are the most peculiar...there are little silver dots/speckles all over the skins of the berries. Leaves are opposite but in random clusters along the limbs. Berries are also in cluster along the stems near the leave clusters....There is evidence of some thorns but not many. Thorns are thin for their length and are about 3/4" long and seem to be only on the main stems.
AnswerHello Kristen,
There are a low number of plants that have opposite leaf arrangments, which is helpful. However that ones that do are all very similar in apperance so I need to ask a few more questions.
What do the leaf margins look like? Are the stems hollow? Do you remember anything about the flowers before the fruit? Are the leave compound or singular? Can you give me an idea of the form of the plant? (tall, low, suckers) A picture(s) would be most helpful if possible.
[email protected] with Plant ID in the subject line.
Please respond and I will get back with you asap.
Thank you, Angie
A picture is worth a thousand words...Thank you for sending them to me! Your plant is known as autumn-olive or Elaeagnus umbellata. The fruit is edible and prized by birds. However the plant is classified as invasive in most parts of its habitat, but if you harvested the fruit the seed numbers would be limited.
Thank you for your question and being patient while I asked so many in return!
