Texas Star?

Question
Mine's not a question, so much as a possible answer to a question posted from 03-01-06.  From the description of the plant, I would say it is "Texas Star", a type of hibiscus.  (Hibiscus coccineus).

Question
Rick, I recieved a plant from my grandmother and was wondering what it was. She doesen't know what the plant is either. The plant grows on a stalk, there are several stalks together, the leaves resemble the leaves of marijuana leaves. The plants produce red flowers that bloom for one day only then fall off. Another bloom will replace the previous bloom several times each summer. The plant grows to a height of about 10 feet each year then dies off at the end of the fall. There is a pod at the end of the stem that holds approx. 30 seeds. Thanks for any help you can provide. P.S. during the growing season, there are many drive by from the local law enforcement. I'm sure they would like to know what it is. Robert

Answer
thanks tiffany
i've never seen a hibiscus plant that has foliage that looks like marijuana plant foliage. i've also never had one that only keeps its' flower for one day. the closest plant i've ever seen to resemble marijuana leaves is a false aralia. however, its' flower does not resemble a hibiscus flower. the plant you name has foliage that does resemble canibis. it does have a hibiscus flower. i've never seen it before. i'm in southern NJ. the only plant in the hibiscus familty that grows outside this far north is rose-of-sharon.
one thing i love about landscape/horticulture is the fact that you can learn new things everyday.
thanks
rick
